ScaleOut StateServer® Version 4.0 Demonstrates Breakthrough Scalability for its Production-Proven Distributed Caching

Orlando, FL – June 3, 2008 – At Microsoft’s annual TechEd conference, ScaleOut Software, Inc. today announced Version 4.0 of ScaleOut StateServer, again raising the bar for its production-proven, distributed caching technology. Because of its ability to dramatically accelerate application performance, the use of distributed caching is quickly gaining in popularity, and ScaleOut Software continues to lead the way with new and improved functionality at every new major release. With a newly enhanced communications architecture, version 4.0 now provides significant performance gains over earlier versions. This version also adds exciting new features that extend the usefulness of distributed caching for applications running on server farms and compute grids.

Responding to the ever-growing need for fast, scalable caching performance, ScaleOut StateServer’s redesigned and optimized communications architecture now delivers 5X faster throughput with linear scalability through at least 64 servers. This throughput boost directly translates into measurable performance gains for all applications using ScaleOut StateServer as their distributed caching solution. In recent tests in the Microsoft Enterprise Engineering Center, ScaleOut StateServer was subjected to maximum access load in tests that ramped from 2 to 64 servers, with more than 2.5 gigabytes of cached data and a sustained throughput of over 92,000 accesses per second using an Infiniband network. ScaleOut StateServer provided linear throughput increases at each stage of the test as servers and load were added.

“Linear scalability is considered the holy grail of scalable computing and vital to the performance of distributed caching,” said Dr. William L. Bain, founder and CEO of ScaleOut Software. “We are very excited that our most recent round of testing has proven ScaleOut StateServer’s ability to scale without bottlenecks and handle extremely large caching loads.”

With version 4.0, ScaleOut StateServer’s production-proven distributed caching adds important new features that simplify its use and take full advantage of its seamlessly integrated scalable, highly available architecture. The product’s new “named cache” APIs allow developers to easily organize and manage groups of cached objects as collections. Developers also can attach metadata or “tags” to cached objects and query the cache for all matching objects. For example, stock-price objects could attach a ticker symbol or a risk rating, allowing an application to find all relevant stock objects for analysis. For fast, scalable query performance, ScaleOut StateServer performs queries in parallel across all caching servers, and the product employs patent-pending technology to ensure that query operations are both highly available and scalable.

Version 4.0 includes several additional significant enhancements that take full advantage of ScaleOut StateServer’s unique architecture. Now users can mix 32-bit and 64-bit caching servers within the same server farm. In addition, both 32-bit and 64-bit client applications can access either 32-bit or 64-bit servers. For example, a 32-bit Web server application can migrate to a 64-bit server and immediately take advantage of the server’s expanded memory for cached application data without the need to port the application to 64-bit.

About ScaleOut StateServer

ScaleOut StateServer provides distributed, in-memory caching for server farms and compute grids to boost application performance and offload database servers. Now in its fourth major release, ScaleOut StateServer has proven its ability to accelerate application performance every day on hundreds of production server farms across a wide range of industries including financial services, ecommerce, and many others. Its patented technology for scaling performance and replicating data enables it to deliver scalable access to cached data while maintaining high availability in case of server failures. Tests have shown that ScaleOut StateServer’s performance quickly outpaces database servers as the load on a server farm grows. By using ScaleOut StateServer’s distributed, in-memory cache for application data storage, developers can maintain fast response times while their server farm grows to handle increasing workloads.

ScaleOut StateServer runs on .NET server farms and communicates over an existing LAN. Once installed, it can be used to replace ASP.NET’s built-in session-state storage and enable ASP.NET applications to seamlessly and transparently store and retrieve session-state. The product also provides powerful APIs for caching application data in a single, uniformly accessible, distributed cache. ScaleOut StateServer implements comprehensive distributed caching semantics, including distributed locking, object timeouts, and automatic memory reclamation. In addition, it offers a unique, scalable event handling mechanism which automatically distributes the event handling load across the server farm and reliably delivers events even if a server outage occurs.

The ScaleOut GeoServer Option uses data replication to extend distributed caching across multiple, geographically distributed data centers so that they can share fast-changing workloads and be fully protected against site-wide failures. GeoServer’s capabilities help IT managers meet the stringent performance and uptime needs of high-end Web sites and other mission-critical applications.
