What's New in Version 1.1
ScaleOut StateServer version 1.1 sets a new standard for workload data storage on server farms. In addition to all the standard features and benefits of ScaleOut StateServer technology, version 1.1 adds valuable new capabilities that provide important benefits and maximize compatibility with ASP.NET. Here's a summary of what’s new:
Support for Multiple Application Stores
Many Web farms host multiple applications across a single farm, and Web users often access multiple applications within a single Web session. ScaleOut StateServer now provides separate stores for each application so that each application can maintain its own namespace of session variables.
Distributed Object Locking
A Web application can experience multiple, concurrent hits from the same session, for example, when the user’s browser uses multiple frames or windows. To maintain the consistency of session data, these Web hits must coordinate their access to the same session object, whether the hits are handled by the same or different servers within the farm.
ScaleOut StateServer now provides automatic object locking which ensures that all read/update accesses to each ASP.NET session object are fully protected. In addition to our transparent support for ASP.NET, we have extended ScaleOut StateServer’s APIs to provide comprehensive support for highly available, distributed object locking in your .NET and C/C++ applications.
Remote Client Access
With version 1.1, server applications can now remotely access ScaleOut StateServer running on a networked server. This feature has many potential uses, such as to allow ScaleOut StateServer to run on a dedicated server farm or to allow a Web server tier to access data stored in an application server tier. ScaleOut StateServer’s installation program now provides a new option to load the Remote Client Support component onto a client system.
Control of Maximum Memory Usage
In some cases, administrators would like to specify the maximum amount of memory that ScaleOut StateServer can use to store objects on each host within the distributed store. Version 1.1 now provides a settable parameter on each host for this purpose. To ensure smooth performance, each host is limited by default to allocating no more than 80% of available physical memory unless overridden by the user’s parameter setting.
Other Enhancements
Version 1.1 also incorporates several other enhancements to its error detection, reporting, recovery mechanisms that maximize ScaleOut StateServer’s ability to detect and recover from server or networking outages. With each new version, ScaleOut Software continuously works to make ScaleOut StateServer as robust and easy to use as possible.
