ScaleOut Software's products are designed to meet the mission-critical needs of enterprise applications, such as ASP.NET e-commerce Web farms and application server farms. Our initial product, ScaleOut StateServer, targets the fast growing Web-based, e-commerce sector of the enterprise software market with an innovative storage solution for customer data during Web sessions.

The Challenge

The emergence of server farms over the last decade has been driven by the need to provide scalable, highly available platforms for processing e-commerce, financial, scientific, and other mission-critical tasks. A major challenge for server farms is to make computational ("workload") data, such as e-commerce shopping carts or financial trading data, readily accessible for processing prior to committing database transactions.

To date, most server farms hold workload data in back-end database servers to ensure their high availability and uniform access throughout the farm. This storage architecture impedes performance, especially by adding delays when fast changing workload data are repeatedly updated. It also creates a bottleneck to scaling the farm and to increasing throughput as the computational load increases.

ScaleOut Software's Technology

To address these challenges and dramatically improve overall performance, ScaleOut Software has developed a new, software-based storage technology that stores workload data objects directly on a server farm. This technology has the following key attributes:

• fast access using distributed, in-memory storage on the server farm,
